The Book Blogger Review
It’s a rare talent for a debut author to have, holding together a complex narrative, with challenging characters and making a book readable. Fantasy Man landed on my desk and I thought – here we go, another blah, blah post-apocalyptic urban fantasy novel – how wrong could I be…
The final line on the blurb is “Will they succeed?” and you really want to know if they will succeed. It’s a tight, well-written story with great characters who stick with you throughout. The action takes place in Europe, Canada and the US with both military and civilian protagonists all of whom come to the story with their own agendas. Fantasy Man challenges the world to draw back from the brink of destruction before he destroys the concept of faith – and by default hope. Without hope, we are nothing in a dark void. The assembled team must solve the clues left to them to help change the world, while the eccentric archaeologist, Clayworth, has found a way for humanity to seek redemption by righting the wrongs in their lives long before they take their final breath – giving us hope that acts of betrayal can be stopped before they’re started.
It’s a complex notion, not covered by your usual fantasy thriller, but it’s a great one. The world must seek redemption, as Clayworth teaches his students to do the same thing. There’s a great joining of science and the spiritual, to create some very interesting story dynamics that have been well thought out by the author. The sense of threat is a constant and makes this a page-turner. It’s a great read and should push the author into the limelight with a little luck.
